In some patients who wish to be glasses free and would like to have a multifocal lens there may be certain conditions which would eventually in older age degrade the visual quality they could achieve initially with a multifocal lens.
A multifocal lens needs a very healthy tear film and also a healthy retina or specifically macula which would allow the different list focus of each section of the multifocal lens to be used fully by the eye.If you suffer from dry eye or from a macula disease such as macula degeneration we would often counsel you against the use of a multifocal lens placed in the eye as removing this lens at a later age is a very difficult operation.
Thankfully, we now have a new solution whereby we can still give you multifocality at a younger age but because we can reverse the multifocality at a later age with a less complicated procedure we would be happy to offer you what is known as dual lens implantation. This means that we can remove the multifocal segment of this optical arrangement at a later age which would be beneficial should the above conditions start to grade your visual quality. Please do ask Dr de Wit about this is a very special and unique approach to achieving glasses independence without the risks of any decreased visual quality at a later age.
The good news is that this additional multifocal lens can also be placed in your eye even if you have undergone previous cataract surgery - please ask whether or not you would be a candidate for this.
